In collaboration with the U.S. Small Business Administration Los Angeles Region and Department of Homeland Security, Mayor Garcetti’s Office of Economic Development hosted a series of 5 events for small business owners and stakeholders to learn about the city's disaster preparedness. The Emergency Management Department presented information on the role they play in helping the city “Stay open for Business.” Attendees also got a tour of the “Safest Building in the City,” that was built to withstand an 8. earthquake and the state-of-the-art Emergency Operations Center. The building is the city’s point of primary coordination for disaster management. The series took place in South/Hollywood, East/Mid-City, South Valley/Harbor, West Valley/Central-West and West L.A/North Valley, in coordination with the various Business Source Centers across the city.
Los Angeles Councilman Mitch Englander was among many dignitaries who gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Trauma Center at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. Providence Holy Cross has one of the few Level II Trauma Centers serving the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys and has saved the lives of traffic accidents, incidents of violence and natural disasters including earthquake for more than 25 years. Paula Devine was sworn in as the newest member of the Glendale City Council and will serve for 10 months to fulfill the remainder of a term vacated by former Councilmember Rafi Manoukian. Paula’s community service involvement in Glendale includes serving as a Board Member of Glendale Healthy Kids, Board Member of the Glendale Police Foundation, Advisory Board Member of the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Foundation, and current President of Soroptimist International of Glendale. Paula is currently a member and past Chair of the Glendale Commission on the Status of Women, on which she has served for eight years.
The Special Olympics World Games are coming to Los Angeles in 2015! Before the Special Olympics World Games begin on July 25, 2015, more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries will be welcomed to Southern California through the “Host Town” program. One hundred communities from San Luis Obispo to San Diego will have the honor of being selected as an official Host Town. The City of Glendale recently joined the movement and will provide athletes with an experience that is rich in art, history and culture. The city will also provide athletes with lodging, training facilities and transportation to and from all training and extracurricular activities. “Glendale is proud to serve as a Host Town for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015,” said Mayor Zareh Sinanyan. “Our community is home to international businesses and residents of many cultural backgrounds, and extending an invitation to athletes from all over the world adds to Glendale’s dynamic and thriving culture.”
The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) announced the finalists for its 2014 Most Business-Friendly City in Los Angeles County Award. The cities of Bellflower, Glendale, Lakewood, Palmdale and Santa Clarita are finalists for the population 65,000 and over category, and the cities of Artesia, El Segundo, Glendora, Pico Rivera and Vernon are finalists in the population under 65,000 category. One winner from each category will be announced at the 19th Annual Eddy Awards on Thursday, November 13th, at the Beverly Hilton. Inaugurated in 1996, the Eddy Awards® gala presents the State’s only “business-friendly city” award, recognizing cities within L.A. County that are proactively promoting business-friendly programs and services, a key factor in job-creation. The San Gabriel Valley Annual Awards Gala honored outstanding individuals and organizations in the San Gabriel Valley who are making a significant contribution to the quality of life and economic vitality of the region on September 6 at the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum. The event was attended by over 300 community members and began with a cocktail reception followed by dinner and presentation of awards. Honorees included Wayne Ratkovich, Chairman’s Award; Cal Poly Pomona, Excellence in Education Award; Supervisor Gloria Molina, Public Service Award; Prolacta Bioscience, Inc., Business of the year award; Foothill Transit, Green Business Award; and Huy Fong Foods, Business Entrepreneur Award.
The Valley Economic Alliance, along with the California Employment Development Department are hosting the 8th Annual Honor a Hero-Hire a Vet Job & Resource Fair on October 16 at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel.
