The City of Burbank’s Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy delivered the annual State of the City address on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, during a luncheon sponsored by the Burbank Chamber of Commerce. More than 350 people packed the Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel for a presentation that included a video of the Mayor answering questions posed by Chamber of Commerce members. Questions included the impact of the ongoing 1-5 project, the status of the new terminal at the Burbank Bob Hope Airport and what the city is doing to retain and attract digital media companies. During her speech, the mayor outlined changes in executive City management and the City’s financial health and major infrastructure projects, such as the Verdugo Pool reopening, Northwest Library seismic upgrades & rebuilt Reservoir 1.
Chief Robert Castro is the 12th Police Chief for the City of Glendale and will take over beginning December 2013. Chief Castro his way up through the ranks to Chief of Police. “I am very confident that Chief Castro will sustain our positive momentum. He understands and appreciates our organization’s values, he is an innovative leader, and he appreciates and respects the role of community support in maintaining Glendale as a very special and safe place,” said Scott Ochoa, City Manager, City of Glendale. Chief Castro is active in regional policing efforts in the San Gabriel Valley as a means of delivering quality, cost-efficient service. Through his leadership, Glendora maintains a strong regional profile in areas such as helicopter/air support, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), jailing services, and public safety radio systems.
 The City of Glendale’s 4th Annual Glendale Health Festival in November offered free medical screenings and health education to the community on conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity and proper nutrition, cancer awareness, diabetes, and more. Multilingual medical staff also provided health-related information and advice. Also present at the free festival were insurance specialists with information regarding the new insurance exchange and the expanded Medi-Cal program. This event was hosted by the Armenian American Medical Society (AAMS) in collaboration with Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, Glendale Healthy Kids, Office of State Senator Carol Liu, Office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Glendale Community Services and Parks Department, Northwest Glendale Lions Club, and the Armenian American Nurses Association.

Pasadena’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony, co-sponsored by the Pasadena Veterans Day Committee and the City of Pasadena, took place on October 1, 2013 at the Pasadena City Hall’s Centennial Square. The theme of the celebration was “honoring our youngest vets,” and saluted those who have served during the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Committee member Leonard Torres, a Marine veteran explained, “We want to honor all who have served. By 2015, there will be over 2 million young civilians who are veterans of these Long Wars.” Speakers included Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca, a Marine veteran, and PCC professor Harold Martin, with an invocation by Lt.Col. (Rabbi) Gilbert Kollin USAF (ret) of Pasadena Jewish Temple. Also present were former mayors William Paparian and Bill Thomson, Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, Pasadena Firefighters Association and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 446.
Robert G. Carmen, President and CEO of Adventist Health, has announced his retirement and will conclude his 44-year career with the health system which spans the states of California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington on April 1, 2014. “Bob is a leader who has successfully navigated many challenges and shifts within this industry. He has made tremendous contributions to Adventist Health and has assembled a senior leadership team to continue this legacy of service,” stated Ricardo Graham, chairman of the board. During his six-year tenure as president, Carmen has championed rural health clinics, innovation, quality and growth. Carmen’s accomplishments also include the formation of Adventist Health Physician Services, clinics and out-patient services. These sites which are now in excess of 180 are bringing more health care and preventive services to hundreds of communities across four states.
