The Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) awarded its Lifetime Achievement Award to a California Lutheran University professor and alumnus. Tim Hengst, the chair of CLU’s multimedia program, received the award at the international nonprofit organization’s 68th Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City in July. The award is the highest honor the organization bestows on an individual. It was created to honor professional AMI members whose life, work and accomplishments have significantly contributed to the profession and fellow illustrators Hb  e has worked as a medical illustrator for Texas Children’s Hospital, The Texas Heart Institute and Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute and runs his own medical illustration business. He is the executive director of the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company, the professional theater company of CLU.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, an icon in American sports history and “the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers” for 64 years, was selected as the Grand Marshal for the 2014 Tournament of Roses, themed “Dreams Come True.”  “I am deeply humbled and greatly honored to be the Grand Marshal of the 125th Rose Parade,” said Scully. “I look forward to sharing this wonderful moment with my wife, Sandi.”  He began his professional baseball-broadcasting career in 1950, with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.  Tournament of Roses President R. Scott Jenkins made the announcement at a press conference at Tournament House in Pasadena. The widow of baseball legend Jackie Robinson recently visited the State Capitol.
Assembly member Chris Holden (Pasadena) and members of the California Legislative Black Caucus honored Mrs. Rachel Robinson, the widow of former Hall of Fame baseball player Jackie Robinson, in the state Assembly and Senate. “The legacy of Jackie Robinson means so much to the citizens of my district.  Jackie Robinson was raised in Pasadena, played ball at Pasadena City College before transferring to UCLA,” said Assembly member Holden.  “He was not only a pioneering black baseball player, but was a civil rights leader. His widow Rachel Robinson carries on his legacy through the Jackie Robinson Foundation.  I am privileged to join in recognizing Rachel Robinson for her spirit and her efforts to champion civil rights.”

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich presided over the official dedication of the Castaic Lake Sheriff’s Substation that will house the Marine Patrol Unit in charge of lake operations. In conjunction with Los Angeles County Lifeguards, the substations 11 deputies and 2 sergeants assigned to Parks Bureau Marine Operations will be responsible for public safety, accident investigation’s, rescue operations and medical emergency response. The supervisor was given a tour of the facilities and demonstrations of the state-of the-art observation capabilities including underwater cameras for rescue divers and patrol boats.

The San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership has announced it has hired Jennifer McLain as its new business assistance manager. This new position will focus on helping businesses in the San Gabriel Valley with a wide range of services including finding new financing, navigating the government permitting process, and attracting skilled employees  "This new position will allow the Partnership to expand the region's business assistance programs," said Cynthia Kurtz, President and CEO of the Partnership. "Jennifer McLain brings years of economic development experience working one-on-one with businesses to help them grow and expand. The City of La Mirada Council hired a 12-year-employee -- Deputy City Manager Jeff Boynton -- as its newest city manager. Boynton will succeed Tom Robinson, effective Sept. 16. The city manager position opened up when Robinson, who had held the position since March 2009, decided to retire at the end of 2012. He stayed on in an interim position until he was replaced. Robinson called the choice of Boynton an "excellent selection." "He will do an outstanding job for years to come," Robinson said. "He knows the community, He's done excellent work on a wide variety of projects. He has the support of staff and trust of the council." Boynton, was hired by the city in 2001 as an administrative aide in public safety. He was promoted to assistant to the city manager in 2009 and named deputy city manager during August of 2012.

The Glendale Police Department recently announced the appointment of Carl Povilaitis as Deputy Chief and Theresa Goldman as Civilian Commander.  Her law enforcement career began in 1981 with the Burbank Police Department, spending 16 years in the ranks of work trainee, police cadet and dispatch operator. Commander Goldman joined the Glendale Police Department in 2012 as the Communications and Technology Administrator managing 9-1-1 dispatch services, and coordinating the department’s technology initiatives. Commander Goldman is the first female to be promoted the ranks of Commander in the Glendale Police Department. Carl Povilaitis began his career in law enforcement with the Glendale Police Department in 1991. He began his career with Glendale in 1991 in the Field Services Division where he worked in Patrol. He was promoted to Captain in 2010. He has since served as the Division Commander of Field Services and most recently Support Services. Deputy Chief Povilaitis is a member of the Kiwanis club and served as a Commissioner representing the City of Glendale on the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority from 1999-2009.
