The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to services.
Although October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Business Life Magazine is dedicated to raising awareness and educating individuals about breast cancer throughout the year. “Womanhood” goes well beyond all of this month of October events –it’s such a great time to be an American Woman!
We encourage you to visit the Healthcare Centers web sites listed below to learn more about breast cancer, breast health, events, seminars and the latest research developments.

Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center
We use the newest General Electric Digital System for all screening and diagnostic mammograms. A screening mammogram is performed on women with normal breasts on physical examination who have no family history of breast cancer. A screening mammogram is the accepted exam of choice for screening for breast cancer.
A diagnostic mammogram is performed here at HPMC. The physician will interpret the Digital Mammogram and perform an ultrasound if a suspected nodule is identified. If a woman has dense breast tissue without a nodule identified on physical examination or mammogram, an ultrasound is important in identifying hidden nodules.
Ultrasounds: This modality uses sound waves to look for masses in the breast. An ultrasound sees through the dense breast tissue and can detect nodules as small as 2-3 millimeters.
Stereotactic Biopsies: HPMC provides state-of-the-art stereotactic equipment for biopsies. This procedure is used if a nodule is noted on the digital mammogram. The patient is placed on the stereotactic table and three-dimensional images of the nodule are seen on the video monitor. www.hollywoodpresbyterian.com/

In 1976, the cancer center at UCLA was designated "comprehensive" by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Of the 67 NCI cancer center programs nationwide, only 41 receive the gold-star comprehensive status. UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC) receives this honor for maintaining the highest standards of excellence in patient care, education, basic science, clinical research and cancer prevention.
JCCC has established an international reputation in a number of areas, such as:
• Developing new cancer therapies
• Providing the best in experimental and traditional treatments
• Expertly guiding and training the next generation of medical researchers
Numerous successful targeted therapies were developed based on basic science done in UCLA laboratories and later clinical research with UCLA patients. These treatments are just the most well known of our JCCC firsts. We handle more than 20,000 patient visits per year and conduct hundreds of clinical trials, providing the latest in experimental cancer treatments. For information, visit: jcccinfo@mednet.ucla.edu.
